When charging by induction, the charged object is brought NEAR but NOT TOUCHING a neutral object. • One object will have a NEGATIVE charge and the other a POSITIVE charge at the end.
Charging by CONTACT If charging with a negative rod, the electrons will jump to the ball and the ball will have a negative charge also.
…..If charging with a positive object The Ball will be left with a POSITIVE charge because it lost its electrons to the positive rod
Using the Electrostatic Series • When RUBBING 2 objects together one will GAIN electrons and one will LOSE electrons to the other
What is GROUNDING?? Grounding allows electrons to move from the ground up or down into the ground if there are too many of them. It gives electrons a pathway to the ground.
CONDUCTORS - Materials that don’t allow electrons to move freely (plastic, rubber) INSULATORS - Materials that allow electrons to move freely (metal wires)
CURRENT ELECTRICITY • Electrons are FREE to MOVE • Ex: Circuits STATIC ELECTRICITY • Charges (+ and -) stay on the object. Caused by friction. • Hair and balloon
CURRENT • Measures the flow of electrons in units Amps -Device used is an ammeter VOLTAGE • Measures the potential energy of electrons in units Volts • Device used is a voltmeter
Current can only flow in a CLOSED CIRCUIT THIS WILL NOT WORK!
What are RESISTORS? • Resistors are devices that resist (slow down) the movement of electrons. They allow appliances to Work (ex. heaters)
PARALLEL CIRCUITS Electrons have more than one path to flow. Household wiring is done this way. 1. The CURRENT SPLITS (is shared) among the paths. 2. The VOLTAGE remains the SAME on all loads
Each bulb will measure 3V if the battery is 3V. The Current will measure 1.5A before each bulb. The total current after and before the battery is 3A
SERIES CIRCUITS Electrons only one path to flow. Christmas lights are done this way. 1. The CURRENT remains the SAME everywhere. 2. The Voltage is shared equally (SPLITS) among the loads
Each bulb will measure 1.5 V if the battery is 3V. The Current will measure 2 Amps everywhere. Place the symbolover the bulbs only. Place theanywhere
