What makes Reading Recovery different? Reading Recovery helps children aged about 6 who are not finding it easy to learn to read and write. .A very specific, personalised programme has to be designed for your child, based upon what s/he knows and can do. Reading Recovery lessons are not just helping your child learn lots of letters and words, but teaching him/her a whole new way of thinking and working in reading and writing situations. So throughout the lesson the teacher will be focusing on how the child is working at the task in hand, and how s/he is learning to think about the challenges of reading and writing. re-reading 2 or 3 familiar books re-reading yesterday’s new book which is carefully recorded by the teacher. working with letters and words in reading and writing composing and writing the child’s own story assembling a ‘cut-up’ story introducing and reading a new book What will you see? Every Reading Recovery lessonincludes - How can you help? You can help most by praising their efforts as they read the books and work on the cut-up sentences they bring home, sharing with them their enjoyment of the stories and talking about what’s happening. If, they get stuck on a work you can say ‘you try’ and silently count to 3. If they haven’t got the word by then, just tell them, to keep the story reading going smoothly.
