E N D
What IS a Thesis? • A Thesis is an Argument! • In Government and in Politics there are very few things that don’t have two sides. You need to prove to the reader that your side is the better side. • A Thesis ANSWERS a Question! • All good research comes from a good question. Even if you find or are assigned a topic first think of a question you want answered, and then figure out how to answer it!
What IS a Thesis? • A Thesis needs to be Specific! • If you say “Trump can’t build the wall because he has no support.” then you will need to explain where specifically he lacks support. (In Congress, Public Opinion, Mexico, etc) • A Thesis is Always Debatable! • Think Science. It is not a Thesis unless someone can contest it. That’s why it is an argument. What’s the point in arguing a point if there is no counter argument?
Topic v Thesis • Your Topic is whatever you have chosen to research for your CAP • “This paper is about Donald Trump reaffirming that the Wall will be built and Mexico will in fact pay for it.” • Great Topic, NOT a Thesis • For a Thesis Statement to work, there must be an Argument in the paper. • “In spite of Donald Trump’s continued call for a wall to be built along the U.S. Southern Border, Congressional opposition and Mexico’s stance against it makes it highly unlikely to happen.” • Tells the reader what you are going to be arguing in the Essay
A Thesis is NOT a Statement of Fact • “Donald Trump wants to build a wall and have Mexico pay for it, and Mexico and Congress are not supportive of it.” • Very similar to whatever your Topic is, just restating it. • This often happens when your topic is assigned for you. (i.e. English, History, AP Tests, SAT, etc.) Restating said topic is not a Thesis, its just a fact. Can you argue a fact?
A Thesis is NOT a Description of the Essay • “In this Essay I will first discuss an article from FOX News supporting Trump’s decision, then I will counteract that with a news video from MSNBC sharing the Liberal point of view, and finally I will share my opinion of the issue and compare and contrast the two news sources.” • Great summary of what a CAP essay should include, NOT a Thesis!
A Thesis is NOT a Question • “Does Donald Trump have enough of an argument, enough influence, and enough public support to ensure that he can achieve this major campaign promise?” • This is a great place to start, now answer that question and you have a Thesis Statement!
A Thesis is NOT an Opinion • “Donald Trump is the greatest President we have ever had, and Congress and Mexico should get out of his way and get over themselves and help build the wall to help our country be better! OR • “Donald Trump is the worst President we have ever had, and he just needs to stop being a racist and get over himself and give up on building that wall.” • These are a great opening statement for your Opinion Paragraph, but lets just save them for the Opinion Paragraph. Its not a Thesis.
In Conclusion! A Thesis IS… A Thesis is NOT… A Topic A Statement of Fact A Description of the Essay A Question An Opinion MISSING COMPLETELY!!!!! • An Argument • An Answer to a Question • Specific • Debatable!
