Common myths about transplants • If I agree to donate my organs, the hospital staff won't work as hard to save my life • Your doctor works as hard as he can to save your life. He is not even the one in charge of transplants • I'm too old to donate. Nobody would want my organs • There have been successful transplants from people in their 70s and 80s. Transplant eligibility has nothing to do with age, just health.
Why are transplants bad? • Religion • Amish, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Shintare all not fond of the idea of organ transplants. • It is illegal in some countries • Organs are being stolen and sold instead of donated
Why are transplants good? • They can save lives • About 27,720 lives are saved every year because of transplants. • One donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of 50 others • Organ donation gives life and costs nothing. • They costs less than life-long medical care • Transplants are very expensive, but will save the receiver money in the long run.
In countries where transplants are illegal... • There is a lot of fear and confusion. • Lack of education • Media just began publicizing it • What has happened where it is illegal? • Sales of stolen organs • Costs are much higher • Animal organs are sold as human organs.
Who are organs taken from? • Willing donors • Deceased people • Living people • Some infants
