  1. What triggers the Microsoft license audit process? Although auditing is a random process and you might have to undergo the Microsoft license audit process at any time some things can trigger it sooner than expected. Some of the things that can trigger the license audit include the following: •Purchase of a new company •Third-party software hosting •Over or under SPLA reporting •Differences in the report of two related products •Missing information in SPLA report •Reporting only minimal usage •Acting out of the SPLA agreement

There are three different types of audits that you can face which include: •Self-certification audit •Independent audit •Verified self-assessment (VSA) Self-certification audit- This type of certification includes two certifications. The first certificate includes a review and details which indicates that every license was reported. The second certificate adds two more things to the first certificate if shortfalls are present in it. The time spent in the self-certification is directly proportional to the internal process, historic documentation, and the level of automation. Independent audit- This type of Microsoft license audit process is a rather expensive and time- consuming. This is because many times the auditor makes decisions or reports which favor Microsoft. Along with that the time spent on the exponentially higher than other types of audits. VSA- This option has the elements of both VSA and self-certification audit.
