Stopping By The Woods On A Snowy Evening By Robert Frost
Theme One possible theme of this poem could be that in the midst of our busy lives, it’s important to sometimes slow down and take in nature’s wondrous beauty. However, another view could be that even though it’s nice to rest, and be lazy for a little while, it’s imperative to keep moving on in your life. There are numerous mountains to climb and great sights to see as you travel forward, so the pause to adore little things cannot last long.
Shift As we see in the poem, the first three stanzas are describing the woods as a calm, peaceful retreat where a person can escape from the responsibilities of life. Imagination can be this place, where nobody cooks, works, nor makes any effort to do anything but dream of having everything on the palm of their hand without moving a finger. In the last stanza, the author shifts away from the woods back to reality. Something that nobody likes, reality, because who likes to have responsibilities? No one, but if we sit around being lazy and never accomplish anything meaningful, our lives will be unworthy.
As we can see the words: Farmhouse, woods, snow, and horse. We can notice that the author might be using metaphors. The woods representing our life and the snow representing our loads in life, and the horse representing our tired soul wanting to stop at the farmhouse that would represent the place where you could find “rest”. Connotation
Attitude The attitude of Robert Frost’s masterpiece seems to be very calm and relaxed. The person described in the poem decides to take a short break from what seems to be a long day of horseback riding, and when he does, he looks around and enjoys the surroundings. However, he has mixed emotions. Although the rider, seizing the opportunity to stop, is very satisfied when looking at the wintry scene, he seems saddened that he must continue his journey.
