Getting Spots (Not near GL or LTG) Dead ball = Middle of Field Both wing officials comes in ‘unobtrusively’, or until there’s resistance. Officials mirror one another. LJ primarily responsible to rule when LTG is obviously obtained. DE CB T L LJ WR RB
Getting Spots (Not near GL or LTG) • Dead ball = Outside of Hash (Side Zone) • Covering official comes in ‘unobtrusively’, or until there’s resistance. Offside official mirrors by coming in between the numbers & the hash marks or until there’s resistance. The further ball is dead in a side zone, the further coming in when mirroring. • LJ primarily responsible to rule when LTG is obviously obtained. DE CB T L LJ RB WR
Getting Spots (Near GL) Near LTG Both officials crash to get an accurate spot!!! LTG: Hold spot until the Referee has time to observe the spot in reference to the LTG. L LJ RB DE CB T WR
Miscellaneous Wing Topics • Goal Line Mechanics: • 4- & 5- Man: Responsible for the GL at whens snapped at the 10 and in. • 6-Man: Responsible for GL at the 7 and in. • Inside of the 5, go directly to GL and then move back up field once play is dead to get the spot, if necessary. Outside of the 5, read the play and move to GL if necessary (most passes). • If the spot is near the GL, run in, with a purpose, in the field of play, not the end zone, then find the ball. Don’t guess. • Whistle Mechanics: • There should be a whistle after each dead ball. The whistle does not ‘KILL’ the play, simply signifies that the ball is dead. • Don’t guess and never blow until you see the ball. Better late than never. . .and definitely better late than inadvertent!!!
More Miscellaneous Wing Topics • Chain Mechanics: • When LTG is obviously gained: • LJ stops the clock and signals to the Referee. HL & Umpire can kill the clock if sure. Should never look back at the chains. • Be sure there are no flags. • Visually communicate with the Referee. Wait for the Referee to give the First Down Signal. • Then, waive to your chain crew to move. • Present your downfield foot for the down box, then set the back stick on the down box. • Set clip on nearest ‘big’ line to back stick. • When LTG is not obviously gained: • LJ communicates to Referee that we’re close (“Close, Close Close” or “Take a look!”) • Referee decides if LTG was obtained or if there will be a measurement. • If measurement, the LJ marks the clip spot. The HL sets the clip on the clip spot.
