Poetry . Notes. There are two types of poems: Narrative and lyric poems. Narrative poem- tells a story using plot, characters and setting and theme. Lyric poem- expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poem’s speaker.

  2. There are two types of poems: Narrative and lyric poems. • Narrative poem- tells a story using plot, characters and setting and theme. • Lyric poem- expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poem’s speaker

  3. 2. Form- refers to the shape and appearance of the poem in lines and stanzas on the page. • The basic unit of a poem is the line. • Poets often group lines into stanzas, similar to paragraph.

  4. 2 Elements that give poetry musical elements are rhythm and rhyme. • Rhythm- the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. • Rhyme- the linking of sounds at the ends of words. Example: ago and know

  6. Poetry Pt. 2 • 1. Sound Devices also make poetry musical. • Alliteration- the repetition of consonant sounds in stressed syllables. • Example: She sells sea shells… • Onomatopoeia- words whose sounds suggests their meanings. • Example- Whoosh, splash

  7. Poetry Pt. 3 • Poems use figurative language to take you by surprise. • Figurative Language- words that are not meant in their exact dictionary sense.

  8. Simile- a comparison between two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”. • Example: As strong as iron bands. • Metaphor- A comparison between two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as” • Example- the fog comes on little cat feet

  9. Personification- gives human qualities to nonhuman things. • Example- a poem describing a volcano as if it were an angry woman
