Things you should know… • Slips and trips: • can happen anywhere in the workplace including outside areas and car parks. • is one of the top three ways people are hurt at work. • can result in serious injuries especially if the fall occurs next to something sharp, hot or on stairs or from height. • is usually caused by a combination of factors.
Things you can do • Keep: • waste/spills off the floor • walkways and work areas clear • floor/ground surfaces level, even and in good order. • Deal with spills immediately – clean them up. • Floor cleaning – follow instructions and leave floors dry. • Ensure good lighting in walkways, stairs and work areas. • Wear suitable and clean shoes. • Report issues promptly.
Busting the myth • Myth: Changing footwear alone will prevent slipping at work. • Truth: Even with non-slip footwear, slips can happen. For example when there are uncontrolled wastes/spills on the floor and/or the floor surface is slippery. These problems need to be fixed.
Key points to remember • Check that the footwear is suitable for the workplace. Footwear that performs well in the wet might not be suitable on oily surfaces or where there are sticky food spillages which clog up the cleats. • Wearing shoes that will have good grip, are kept clean and fit well will make a difference.
Key points to remember • Slips, trips and falls can happen inside and outside of your workplace. • Keep waste/spills off the floor. • Deal with spills immediately – clean them up. • Keep walkways and work areas clear and well lit.
