OSU-Colombia Collaboration: Capstone Design Courses and Study Abroad Program
Issue: Underdevelopment in University Engineering Education and STEM for School-Aged Children • “Technological capacity” is critical to economic and social development of a country • How do we address this issue? • Collaborate with developing universities to create low-cost experiments and instructional materials for universities and schools STEM
weLab: Low-Cost Engineering Laboratory Project (since 2002)* • Two Challenges: • Experiment development costs • Instructional costs • Approach: • Students can develop low-cost experiments for a capstone project • Students can develop on-line explanations of experiment construction and operation • * Idea of N. Quijano, from Bogotá, Colombia
Multi-disciplinary Capstone Design Class: • Au14: ENGR 4901/4902; Sp15: ENGR 4903 • University or K-12 level experiment design challenges (or propose one): • Environmental Engineering • Sustainable Buildings and Greenhouses in Colombia • Sustainable Engine Design • Electromagnetics and Motors • Low-cost Solar or Mechanical-Based Lighting • Collaborate with Colombians over the internet (simultaneous projects in Bogotá and Pasto) • Travel to Colombia Spring Break 2015 for collaboration, return, finalize design, report
Study Abroad Program: • ENGR 5797.14 • OSU-Colombia Collaboration, 3 credits • Travel Spring Break 2015 (9 days total) • OSU Alumni hosts: Prof. NicanorQuijano, Prof. Jorge Finke, Prof. Andrés Pantoja • Visit universities and schools: • Bogotá (Univ. de los Andes/Villavicencio) • Pasto (Univ. de Nariño/Liceo) • Travel costs: <$2500 - $1000 (BETHA grant) = <$1500 (may go down more) Spanish desired, but not required
