  2. Transitions • Writers use transitions for many purposes. • To show cause and effect: as a result, therefore • To introduce an example: for example, such as • To introduce an opinion: in my opinion, as for me • To show a result: as a result, thus

Transitions in Narratives • When writing narratives, writers use transitions to show shifts in time and setting. • Writers also use transitions to show relationships among experiences and events. • These transitions help readers know when something is taking place in relation to a previous event. They also help us know when characters have changed location or if something about the setting has changed. • Use transitions to make your story clear and easy to follow.

  5. Rule of Thumb: Readers should never not know where they are or when something is taking place relative to a previous event.

  6. Reflective Conclusions • Your story is not just going to “end.” • You are going to reflect on the experience that you have written about. • Tell me what “truth” was revealed and how it has affected your life. • This should be the LAST PARAGRAPH of your paper. • First person pronouns are appropriate.

  7. Example Conclusion Over the past ten months, I have grown to appreciate the decision I made that day in Savannah more and more. I can honestly say it was the best decision of my life to finally admit my feelings for Brook and to choose to spend my life with him. Since then, my outlook on life is brighter because I have someone to share it with.

  8. Dialogue Brook took his hat off and tossed it in the backseat. With a tremor in his voice, he announced, “We need to talk.” “Ummm. Okay,” I responded hesitantly. Notice use of commas. Notice use of descriptive dialogue tags.

  9. Internal Thoughts As Brook shared his feelings, I could not open my mouth in response. I’m scared, I thought, I’m scared of how our lives are about to change. Notice use of italics. Notice use of dialogue tag.
