WSMO in Knowledge Web http://www.wsmo.org/2004/d19/d19.2/ 2nd SDK cluster f2f meeting Rubén Lara Digital Enterprise Research Institute ruben.lara@uibk.ac.at
Overview • Introduction • Knowledge Web overview • The potential of WSMO in Knowledge Web • Industry • Research • Education • Conclusions and future work
Introduction • (SEKT, DIP, Knowledge Web) SDK working group • What is the role of Knowledge Web in the Semantic Web Services working group (WSMO+WSML+WSMX)? • How Knowledge Web benefits from its participation in the Semantic Web Services working group of the SDK cluster?
Knowledge Web overview • Industry • 1.1 Industrial application needs • 1.2 Evaluation for technology selection • 1.3 Technology recommendations • 1.4 Promotion of ontology technologies • 1.5 Cross-network cooperation • 1.6 Semantic portal infrastructure • Research • 2.1 Scalability • 2.2 Heterogeneity • 2.3 Dynamics • 2.4 Semantic Web Services • 2.5 Semantic Web language extensions • 2.6 Towards a virtual research center • Education • 3.1 Foundations for Virtual Institute for Semantic Web Education (VISWE) • 3.2 Educational content and event provision • 3.3 Semantic delivery platform
The potential of WSMO in Knowledge Web • INDUSTRY
The potential of WSMO in Knowledge Web • INDUSTRY • 1.1 Industrial application needs activities will provide industrial use cases to WSMO • 1.3 WSMO will provide guidance to the technology recommendations of Knowledge Web in the area of Semantic Web Services • 1.4 The dissemination activities that WSMO will acomplish will help the promotion tasks of Knowledge Web • The promotion of ontology technologies will facilitate the adoption of the results of WSMO • 1.5WSMO will ensure a close cooperation of Knowledge Web with other projects in the context of the SDK cluster • 1.5 will help to widen the cooperation of WSMO with other initiatives
The potential of WSMO in Knowledge Web • Research
The potential of WSMO in Knowledge Web • Research • 2.5 The WSML working group is investigating refinements (subsets) of F-Logic, and it is developing proposals such as OWL-Light • Clear and strong relation to the Semantic Web language extensions in Knowledge Web, and a fruitful cooperation between both efforts will be established. • 2.6 The close cooperation already established within the WSMO working group will facilitate the objectives of the Knowledge Web virtual research center. • 2.6 will contribute to the integration of the different research efforts of the Knowledge Web partners, having a possitive effect on the cooperation within the WSMO working group. • 2.5 & 2.6 will be in direct contact with WSMO • The other WPs will be in contact with WSMO via WP 2.4 (Semantic Web Services) • WP 2.4 activity will be aligned with the WSMO working group, will redirect the problems encountered in the development of WSMO to the relevant Knowledge Web activities, and will feed back the relevant results from the other research activities to the WSMO working group.
The potential of WSMO in Knowledge Web • Research • 2.1 will receive from WSMO use cases in the Semantic Web Services area for testing the applicability of its research results (including modularization and benchmarking), • WSMO will use these results in order to be able to deal with the expected increase in the number of Semantic Web Services available, to deal with domain ontologies, and to evaluate the reuse of SW tools. • 2.2focus its research on mediation at data level. WSMO will provide problems that data mediation should solve in the area of Semantic Web Services • WSMO will apply the Knowledge Web results in the definition of mediators. • 2.3investigate the evolution and evaluation of ontologies, as well as meaning negotiation. WSMO will provide use cases • Important aspect for WSMO, as the domain ontologies used in the definition of Semantic Web Services might change over time. WSMO will benefit from the results
The potential of WSMO in Knowledge Web • Research • 2.4 Knowledge Web will benefit from the joint results that will be obtained in cooperation with SEKT and DIP • The work in 2.4 will become part of the WSMO activity • The Semantic Web Services WP will be in charge of distributing the results and problems from WSMO to the relevant Knowledge Web activities and it will feed back the Knowledge Web results to the WSMO working group. • State of the art on Semantic Web Services • Requirements for SWSs description • Discovery & composition • Invocation and interoperation
The potential of WSMO in Knowledge Web • Education • The education area of Knowledge Web will include in the mid-term education materials about WSMO, and would be expected to provide professional training for companies in WSMO in order to facilitate its adoption.
Conclusions and future work • The role of WSMO in Knowledge Web will be of great relevance • providing important results and problems to the research area • cooperating with the industry area to support the adoption of WSMO in an industrial setting • The joint of WSMO towards standardization in the area of Semantic Web Services will have a big impact in industry • Knowledge Web will have an active role in the development of WSMO • contributing with its research to the sucess of the initiative • supporting the dissemination of the results of the working group • Future work • focused on monitoring the effective cooperation between WSMO and Knowledge Web and assuring that the results and problems flow between both is actually done. • The Semantic Web Services activity, led by DERI, will work towards these objectives, acting as the strongest (but not unique) point of union between WSMO and Knowledge Web.
