  2. Advantages • Following are some major advantages of computer networks. • File Sharing • Computer network allows file sharing and remote file access. It is a method of distribution of digital stored information like multimedia, computer programs, documents, etc.

  3. Cont… 2. Resource/Hardware Sharing Users can share devices such as printers, scanners, CD-ROM drives, hard drives etc. For example, 20 computers can be interconnected, using a network, and just with one modem and one printer can efficiently provide the services to all 20 members.

  4. Cont… 3. Application sharing Applications can be shared over the network, and this allows to implement client/server applications 4. User communication Networks allow users to communicate using e-mail, newsgroups, and video conferencing etc.

Increased Storage Capacity A standalone computer might fall short of storage memory, but when many computers are on a network, memory of different computers can be used in such case. One can also design a storage server on the network in order to have a huge storage capacity.

  13. Cont… • Dependency on the Main File Server • In case the main File Server of a computer network breaks down, the system becomes useless. In case of big networks, the File Server should be a powerful computer, which often makes it expensive.
