Objectives • Assessment of multiple management tools • genetic potential for disease control, • chemical potential for disease control • benefits of integrating multiple tools for control of white mould and bacterial blights. • Assess efficacy of experimental chemicals, and novel tank mix combination for management of white mould and bacterial blights.

Sclerotinia White Mold • Management of white mold on bean • Broad host range • Soil-borne fungus, sclerotia long-lived in soil • Infections well below crop canopy • No highly effective host resistance • Curative fungicides (vinclozolin) phased out • Timing of protective fungicides (boscalid, fluazinam, etc) is often difficult ALTERNATIVES??

Bacterial Blights • Seed-borne • Rain splash and wind driven particles • One contaminated seed in 16,000 can lead to severe outbreak of disease • Can reduce photosynthetic potential and yield • Managed primarily by disease-free seed and bactericidal seed treatments (streptomycin and copper) • Alternatives???

2011 – Survey Results • Alberta: 28 fields in three counties • Manitoba: 28 fields in four municipalities • Incidence and severity of: bacterial blights, white mold, root diseases.
Conclusions • Demonstration of: • efficacy of experimental fungicides • novel tank mix combinations • Additive effects of integrating multiple tools • New seed treatment for control of seed-borne bacteria and fungi on pulse seed • Disease Surveillance in commercial dry bean fields in AB, SK, MB for bacterial blights, white mold and root diseases
