  1. Expository Essay #1 Draft II: Jazzed up and typed up

  2. #1: Type • Transfer everything you wrote on the shaping sheets to a Word document (include introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion).

  3. #2: Analogy • Add an analogy comparing something in the book to something you know about (use the graphic organizer to help you do this)

  4. #3: Subordinate Clauses • Add a subordinate clause (with a subordinating adverbial conjunction) to EACH PARAGRAPH. • This means you should have at least four—one for the intro, two for each body paragraph, and one for the conclusion. • But…the more, the better your writing sounds.

  5. #4: Revisions • Read over your essay and ask yourself the following: • Do the sentences flow together nicely? • Is there anything that needs more explanation/doesn’t make sense? Is there anything that seems out of place? • Are you conveying the main points of your thesis throughout the body paragraphs? In other words, are you discussing how Esperanza’s environment influenced her, specifically referring to stories/characters from the book? • Do you have quotes integrated in your body paragraphs and commentary to explain them?

  6. Rubric • Remember, you are being evaluated on the “concrete detail” and “word choice” sections on the rubric—pay attention to these!
