  1. YOUR BRAIN ON DRUGS

  2. Neurons are the cells responsible for passing chemical and electrical signals in the brain • Each region of the brain performs different functions • In the centre is the reward pathway (RP), which wants us to feel good and likes to give us neurotransmitters

  3. I hang or stand by a wall, run fast with hands but no feet at all. What am I? • A Clock

  4. The Physiology of Health • Within seconds of entering the body, drugs cause dramatic changes to synapses in the brain. • By bypassing the five senses and directly activating the brain’s RP fast and hard, drugs can cause a jolt of intense pleasure. • This pleasure is caused by tricking the RP into releasing a large amount of dopamine.

  5. If it takes six men one hour to dig six holes, how long does it take one man to dig half a hole? • There is no such thing as half a hole 

  6. The Brains’ Coping Method • Drugs of abuse affect the brain in such a dramatic way that the brain must try to adapt. • One way the brain compensates is to reduce the number of dopamine receptors at the synapse.

  7. A farmer has seventeen sheep. All but nine of them die. How many sheep does he have left? • nine

  8. Tolerance • As a result, after the user has “come down,” they will need more of the drug next time when they want to get high. This response is commonly referred to as tolerance.

  9. How many apples can you fit into an empty box? • One, once you put an apple in the box it isn’t an empty box anymore

  10. You are running in a street marathon and you overtake the person in 2nd place. What place are you now? • second

  11. The Fastest Way to the Brain Fastest: Smoking. Lungs-blood-brain Second: Injecting. Blood vessel-blood-brain Slowest: Ingestion: Drink-stomach-blood-brain

  12. Why is it illegal to bury a man living in South Carolina in North Carolina? • It’s actually illegal to bury a living man...anywhere

  13. Hardwiring An Addict • Brain regions responsible for memory, judgment and learning are affected by the RP and begin to physically change. Once this happens, drug seeking behaviour became habit.

  14. You throw away the outside and cook the inside. You eat the outside and throw away the inside. What did you eat? • Corn on the cob
