There were closing and evacuations caused by the Mohawk and Schoharie rivers rising at rapid speeds. In the Schoharie river the two gauges that measure water were washed up by the water and in Albany the water was four feet above the normal level. Things like this made Irene one of the biggest storms in 7o years. Whole streets were even underwater in some parts of Schenectady. Irene even closed highways and roads making travel difficult and at times impossible.
