What is Asbestos? • Naturally occurring mineral • Asbestos - from the Greek meaning “inextinguishable” • Heat Resistant • Bonds with Cement and Rubber • Chemically Resistant • Fine Fibres, Durable, HighlyFlexible and Strong
Types of Asbestos • Common types used in asbestos containing materials (ACM’s) • Chrysotile (white) • Crocidolite (blue) • Amosite (brown) • Other types of ACM: • Actinolite • Tremolite • Anthophylite
Types and location of ACM’s on-board • Mercur was constructed in 1989 in Russia for cold climates. • Chrysotile asbestos was commonly used for insulation at this time. • Only type of asbestos ever used on board was chrysotile (white) asbestos. • Used for: • Wall and ceiling panels • Thermal insulation • Gaskets • Brake bands
Types and location of ACM’s on-board • Extensive removal and control program in 2006 in USA and Singapore. • Remaining items include: • Most wall panels in accommodation • Gaskets • Limited wall insulation • Remaining items (except gaskets) will be labelled as below.
Can One Fibre Kill? • Measurements of airborne fibre concentrations in an average Australian city for example indicate that an average person inhales up to a million fibres every year. • The average person has significant numbers of fibres in their lungs. • Scientific evidence DOES NOT support opinions that one asbestos fibre can kill
Risks in Perspective NOTE: Above data provided from Coffey Environments Pty Ltd.
Overview of ACM Controls • All ACMs are subject to stringent control procedures including the following: • Detailed ACM Management Plan. • No mounting of personal effects on cabin walls. • Any damage to ACM to be reported immediately to the HSE Adviser, followed with an “iCU” card to ensure that damage is registered and actioned. • Follow safety signage especially restricted access types.
Work required in suspected Asbestos item • If work is required on an item suspected of containing Asbestos • Stop work and advise your Supervisor. • See the HSE Adviser. • Consult Asbestos Location Register. • All work on ACM’s to be controlled by the Permit to Work System. • All personnel conducting works on ACM shall be made aware of the hazards, the required safety procedures, be competent (and comfortable) to do the work and receive the relevant on board training.
