2. Simile • A comparison of two unlike things, using connecting words such as like, as or seems in the comparison. • His feet were as big as boats.

3. Metaphor • A metaphorstates that one thing is something else. It is a comparison, but it does NOT use like, as, or seems to make the comparison. • Her hair is silk.

4. Simile or Metaphor?(press A for simile and B for metaphor) 1. The baby was like an octopus, grabbing at all the cans on the grocery store shelves. 2. As the teacher entered the room she muttered under her breath, "This class is like a three-ring circus!" 3. The giant’s steps were thunder as he ran toward Jack. 4. The pillow was a cloud when I put my head upon it after a long day.

Simile and Metaphor Game • Find a partner sitting near you. • In your writing spiral journal, create as many similes and metaphors as possible for the word you are about to be given. • You will get 1 point for each simile and 2 points for each metaphor. • Your examples must be written so that they can be read.
