Professional Development • 10-15 minute technical talks at SRTC main meetings. • Enhance “technical” aspect of technical committee. • Michel Berdoyes presented phenolic nozzle technology at the January ASM meeting. • Accepting volunteers for future talks. • Solid Rockets Text Book • Dr. Frederick reports that draft chapters and problems have been written. Would welcome review by members of the SRTC. • Wiley Aerospace “encyclopedia” • Vigor Yang and Dr. Frederick putting together 50 page section on solids. • Dr. Frederick reports that all chapters are in. • 2010 JPC “Advanced Solid Rockets” short course. • Similar to the well received 2008 course. • An abridged version of the UAH graduate level solids course. 2010 Short Course Details • Overview: • The course examines fundamental and advanced concepts related to solid rockets. Theoretical and practical aspects of the field are covered. • Topics include: system design, component design, propellant, manufacturing, processes, testing, and failure analysis. • Designed for engineers and scientists in the propulsion industry who desire a greater understanding of solid rockets. • Schedule: • 1 full day and one half day (Thursday and Friday of this week) • Instructors: • International collection of 13 solid rocket experts from private industry, government labs, and academia. • Many were involved in the UAH course. • Students: • So far…20 students (from 7 countries) have registered. Future Ideas • Design competition at university level • Contacts: Ian Halliwell and Jim Hornick have both run these at universities in the past. • Possible Award: trip to JPC • Scope: paper design only • Young Professionals Social hosted by SRTC • Lecture series or special session panel at ASM or JPC • Possible topics include: • Pressure Oscillations • Health Monitoring, Aging & Surveillance, • Advanced modeling (CSAR, IHPRP) Solid Rockets Technical Committee (SRTC) Education Subcommittee July, 2010
