  2. Last Week: Can you think of a time when someone came to you and said “Do you want the good news or the bad news first?” Which one do you usually pick first? Have you noticed that many times the good news comes with some bad news, and the bad news comes with some good news?

  3. “Gospel” = Good News What would you say is the “gospel” message? How would you define it? The good news is that the separation that sin causes between us and God can be repaired by the grace of God through turning from wrong, choosing to do right, and showing surrender to Christ as the leader of your life by dying to your old life, being buried in water, and being raised to a new life of obedience to God and His word.

  4. Living the Mission The good news is shared outside the church building doors by the church and inside during our classes and services. We have been given a mission to go into all the world to make disciples through teaching and baptism (Matthew 28:18-20) and this series is intended to help us participate in our mission.

  6. The Text: Romans chapter one ends with the good news and the bad news being brought by God through Paul to the Gentile audience in Rome. This week’s chapter has the good news and bad news brought to the Jewish part of the church in Rome.

  7. God Knows! In 2:1-4 their double standard is exposed. The Jews are condemning the actions of others and doing the same things. 2:3 “So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?”

Romans 2:5-16 Page 1748 5But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 God "will give to each person according to what he has done." 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

Romans 2:5-16 Page 1748 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.  9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism.

  10. Romans 2:12 RO 2:12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. God has placed a moral compass within us so we know when we are doing wrong even if we have not read that it is wrong. Those who know that have trespassed God’s instruction are guilty of another level of disobedience. They know better!

Romans 2:13-16: 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

  12. Having the Law or Living the Law? Because the Jews have had access to God’s written law they knew what God approved of and what he did not approve of. For some, their connection to the law became a source of pride and separation from the gentiles as the used the law to condemn others without looking within themselves. 2:24 sums it up by saying “As it is written: ‘God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.’”

  13. Romans 2:17-29 God saw through this and uses 2:17-29 to call attention to their sinful attitude as well as to remind the Jews that God’s children should act like His children.

Romans 2:28-29 Paul is using a play on words since the word “Jew” can mean “one who praises God.” RO 2:28 A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. 29 No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.

  15. Taking It Home God is a fair judge and that he does not show favoritism so he will not overlook your sin or punish anyone unfairly. God’s wrath will be revealed and judgment is coming. Help people prepare today. People watch how we live and how we use God’s word – people need encouragement not just condemnation. Share encouraging passages! Hypocrisy turns people away from God. Acknowledge your sin and speak of God’s grace. We bring praise to God when our faith actively leads us to persist in doing good. Keep up the good fight!

  16. Next Week: Romans 1 and 2 show us why we need good news and what the bad news is. For Friend and Neighbour Sunday we will look at Romans Chapter 3 with a sermon titled “Righteous!” Read through and see if you can figure out why I chose that title.
