  2. International Military Tribunal • Executed 22 major Nazi generals in Nuremberg on November 20, 1945 • Julius Streicher was a publisher of a anti- Semitic newspaper • He was executed for crimes against humanity and incitement to Genocide (3) International Military Tribunal

Raphael Lemkin created the term “Genocide” during the Holocaust to describe the mass murder of the Jews that has taken place in Germany. • “Geno” is Greek for race or tribe and “Cide” is Latin for killing. • Genocide is defined as acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. (4) What is Genocide?

(a) Killing members of the group;(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. (5) Crime of Genocide

Incitement means encouraging or persuading another to commit an offense by way of communication. • Incitement to Genocide also had to be proven to be direct, by direct it means that both the speaker and the listener known that they are being persuaded to do something. • It could be communicated through drawings, images, or speeches. • People committing incitement to genocide were also put on trial even if the crime had not been committed. December 8, 1948, the United Nations general assembly approved the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment on the Crime of Genocide. • It entered into force on January 12, 1951 • More than 20 countries around the world confirmed it • The United States singed the Convention on November 14, 1988 (2) UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment on the Crime of Genocide

  7. July 12, 1998, the International Criminal Court was established to act against genocide, war crimes and crimes again humanity. • It added on to the definition of crimes against humanity and outlawed these crimes during times of war and peace. (1) Treaty of 1998
