Increased Requirements On Jan 22, 2008, MUTCD released a regulation stating that traffic signs and pavement markings on all roads open to public traffic must have increased reflectivity. 2011 2016 2017 2019 2018 2013 2014 2015 2012 January 2012 Implementation plan established to replace existing non-compliant signs. January 2015 All Regulatory, Warning, Ground-mounted signs (except street name) must meet minimum requirements. January 2018 All identified street-name or overhead guide signs must meet minimum requirements.

ADA Parking Signs • Sign specifications can be mandated by state or local authorities • Utilize International Symbol For Accessibility • ADAAG (Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines) specify amount of accessible parking spaces per lot
ADA Parking Signs ADAAG 2010 208.2 * One in every eight accessible spaces, but not less than one, shall be served by an access aisle 96 in (2440 mm) wide minimum and shall be designated "van accessible"
Questions to Ask Customers Where is the sign going? • Many states have MUTCD supplements and additional sign requirements • If not a Federally regulated sign, may be a state specific design • If a parking sign, many states have specific requirements on wording and fines • To determine if a state has an MUTCD supplement, visit: http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/resources/state_info/index.htm The designation number if possible • Having the number helps determine the exact requirements • This number also makes finding state specific signs much easier • If the requested sign is not a regulated sign, do they want us to follow the design standards? • There are many signs in use that are not regulated. We can design a sign to follow the current standards for Regulatory, Warning and Guide signs
