  2. LITTLE BLUE PENGUINS • Blue penguins have been in Oamaru for over 60 years. • Blue penguins can stay under water for 2 minutes. • They sleep for 2 minutes every 4 hours.

  3. Some facts • The maori name for blue penguins is Korora. • The scientific name is Eudyptula minor. • Little blue penguins can race through the water at speeds of 6km per hour. • The little blue penguin is the smallest of all the penguins.

  4. PREDATORS • Their predators are rats, cats, ferrets, stoats, weasels, dogs ,seals and humans.

  5. EGG LAYING • The Blue penguins vary the onset of each breeding season. • Some seasons they begin laying eggs where as other seasons it is as late as September. • The penguins normally lay 2 eggs in one group.

  6. Their habitats are beaches, salty waters and places that have shelter.

  7. BREEDING • Little Blues have a very low divorce rate and will usually mate for life. • Between May and June the little blues prepare their nests for the breeding season. • Between August and November a breeding pair will lay 1 or 2 eggs. • By around 8 weeks of age the chicks are ready to feed for themselves.

FEET, BEAKS AND WINGS • Beak: the penguins beak is for catching fish and swallowing them whole. • Wings: the penguins wings are for keeping balance on land. • Feet: the penguins feet are webbed so it is much easier to swim fast. • The penguins wings are for keeping balance on land because the penguin spends most of their day in water • ;The penguins beak is for catching fish and swallowing them whole. • The penguins feet are webbed so it is a lot easier to swim.

  11. Fledging • Blue penguin chicks weigh around 45 grams at hatching and normally gain around 200g per week. • One parent will remain with the chicks while the other is at sea feeding, they will swamp these duties every few days.
