Transformations • Transformation – the movement of a figure • Rigid Transformation- • A transformation that preserves size & shape • Pre-image – the beginning figure BEFORE • Image – the figure AFTER the transformation
Rigid Transformations • Translation • To “slide” a figure vertically, horizontally or both • A transformation in which every point of the preimage is moved the same distance in the same direction.
PRIME SYMBOL • An apostrophe that is used to denote the new point locations after the transformation has occurred • Point A would become point A’ • Point B would become point B’ (etc.)
Rigid Transformations • Rotation • To “turn” a figure around a point (called the center of rotation) • A transformation in which every point of the preimage is moved by the same angle through a given fixed point.
Rotation Rotate this figure 90° clockwise about the given point. B A B’ A’
Rigid Transformations • Reflection • To “flip” a figure over a line • A transformation in which every point of the preimage is moved across a line known as the mirror line so that the mirror is the perpendicular bisector of the segment connecting the point and its image.
