About the ALSC • “A network of more than 4,000 children's and youth librarians, children's literature experts, publishers, education and library school faculty members, and other adults committed to improving and ensuring the future of the nation through exemplary library service to children, their families, and others who work with children.” • Since 1941; one of 11 divisions of the ALA; has had several name changes since that time • Supports all types of libraries that serve children • Targets children from birth through age 14

  3. The ALSC’s Mission Statement: “The [ALSC] develops and supports the profession of children's librarianship by enabling and encouraging its practitioners to provide the best library service to our nation's children.”

  4. Membership Dues & Benefits • Members pay $45/year for Regular and Corporate; $18/year for Students, in addition to ALA Membership dues • Members receive journal: Children and Libraries 3 times/year, plus quarterly newsletter: ALSConnect • Members get discounts on publications, products and registration for ALSC and ALA events • Members can participate in electronic discussion lists • Members have access to “Members Only” section of Website

Given yearly at ALA Annual Conference John Newbery Medal to author of most outstanding children’s book Randolph Caldecott Medal to illustrator of most outstanding American picture book Laura Ingalls Wilder Award to outstanding long-time author or illustrator Mildred L. Batchelder Award for best foreign-language story translated into English Theodor Seuss Geisel Award to author and illustrator of the outstanding book for beginning readers Pura Belpré Award to best Latino author or illustrator (given biennially) Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children’s Video Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production (coming in 2008) ALSC Literary Awards

Professional Grants & Awards • ALSC/BWI Summer Reading Program Grant • Provides $3,000 grant for public libraries • ALSC/Tandem Library Books Literature Grant • Honors member who has implemented an outstanding reading or literature program for children • The Bechtel Fellowship • Allows librarian to spend a month or more studying at the University of Florida’s Baldwin Library • Distinguished Service Award • Honors member who has made a significant impact on library services to children • Penguin Young Readers Group Award • Enables four children's librarians to attend ALA’s Annual Conference • Maureen Hayes Author/Illustrator Visit Award • Pays up to $4,000 for honorarium and travel for a visiting author/illustrator

  7. Scholarships • The Frederic G. Melcher Scholarship • Two $6,000 scholarships awarded annually to individuals pursuing MLS degree, and who intend to work in any type of library serving children. • The Bound to Stay Bound Books Scholarship • Four $6,500 scholarships awarded annually to individuals pursuing MLS or advanced degree, and who intend to work in any type of library serving children. • Bookapalooza Program • Three select libraries obtain materials that will help transform their collection and provide the opportunity for these materials to be used in their community in creative and innovative ways. • Applications are being accepted through April 15, 2007.

  8. Conferences • 2007 Conference: June 21-27 in Washington, DC • Held as part of ALA Annual Conference • Schedule of ALSC programs and meetings in Washington, DC. • 2008 Conference: June 26-July 2 in Anaheim, CA

Special Projects & Partnerships • Collaborates with PBS for Between the Lions series, promoting literacy for children 4-7 • Provided input for Reading Rockets’ Toolkit materials for librarians • Promoter of national D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) Day in April • Partners with health care providers for Born to Read program, reaching out to new or expectant parents and encourages them to read to their children • Many more
