Objective 05/16/2013 Describe the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse. Intro What is an eclipse? DO NOW - Take out Signed Progress Reports
Eclipse • Umbra • Penumbra • An event in which the shadow of one celestial object falls on another • To cover up • Inner, darker part of a shadow • Outer, lighter part of a shadow
Lunar eclipse • Moon passes into the Earth’s shadow
Solar eclipse • Moon completely covers the Sun and the Moon’s shadow falls on Earth
What is bigger, the Sun or Moon? • Why does it look like the Sun and Moon are the same size during a solar eclipse? • Sun • Sun is 400 times larger than the Moon • Sun is 400 times farther away from the Moon • Thus the Moon and Sun look like the same size
Why don’t we have solar and lunar eclipse every month? • Moon’s orbit is tilted • So, the Moon’s shadow does not always fall on Earth • And the Moon does not always go through the Earth’s shadow
Objective 05/04/11 Describe the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse. Outro Why doesn’t the entire Earth see a total solar eclipse?
