I love to use my physical strength to move things, to playfully fight with my male friends, to defend someone. • Marine: I can get dirty, fire guns, jump out of airplanes, and do dangerous stuff • I can build stuff, and I can blow it up • The coolest thing about being a guy, we could go to war and do it legal like. • We get to use power tools • “Why boys are more better than girls”

  3. What is Masculinity? • King • Warrior • Mentor • Friend

  4. King • God: “King of Kings” • Jesus is destined to rule with all power and authority • Man: Adam given dominion over creation (Gen. 1:28)

  5. The Heart of a King • A heart that provides for others • Looks ahead • Watches over • Provides order, mercy, justice • He is authority • He is leader • In man, the king is under a higher authority

  6. Warrior • Jesus: returning on a white war horse, in a blood-spattered robe, with a sword in His mouth and a rod of iron in His hand (Rev. 19:11-16) • Man: called to engage in spiritual warfare (Eph. 6)

  7. Heart of a Warrior • Protective heart • Shields, defends, stands between, guards • Protector • Wants to fight against evil

  8. Mentor • God: Teacher of life • Men: followers of Jesus are to “teach others also”

  9. Heart of a Mentor • Teaching heart • Knows and wants others to know • Models, explains, trains • A man is supposed to know things • Men are supposed to teach life

  10. Friend • God: “God is love” • Calls us His friends • Man: We are to love God and love others

  11. Heart of a Friend • Loving heart • Caregiving heart • Compassionate • “I will be with you.” • Commitment maker, a promise keeper • Puts others first

  12. Initiator • The bottom line of masculinity is being an initiator: the one who takes the lead • Leads in: • Providing • Protecting • Mentoring • Befriending

  13. Initiator • Take the lead . . . Be the first to: • apologize • seek forgiveness • say “I was wrong” • reach out to someone on the fringes • stand up to a bully • speak out against wrong

  14. A Real Man A real man is kind. A real man is caring. A real man walks away from silly macho fights. A real man helps his wife. A real man helps his kids when they are sick. A real man doesn’t run away from his problems. A real man sticks to his word and keeps his promises. A real man is honest. A real man is not in trouble with the law. --16 year old whose father left when he was 8
