Research in progress: inclusion How effective are we at reaching families in our area ? What can we do to better reach families especially the ‘hard to reach’ ? Methodology 1. A mapping exercise of all known families in the area; • registered and using services • registered and not using services • unregistered and using services 2. Semi structured interviews with 8 professionals and parents in the area. 3. Semi structured interviews with 15-20 parents who do not access our services 4. Semi structured interviews with 10-12 parents who do access our services

Interviews Semi structured interviews with 8 people – The sample: professionals and involved parents in the area; • 2 parents – the Chair of the Partnership Board and a long term involved parent • 2 community development workers • A community worker working with the travelling community • A health visitor working with ‘hard to reach’ groups • A project worker from Homestart • A professional from another local Sure Start programme
Semi structured interviews with parents from the area who do not use our services The sample: • parents registered but not using the service • Parents attending other groups in the area not accessing Sure Start services • Parents accessed through Health Visiting • Approximately 15-20 interviews
Semi structured interviews with parents who do use our services The sample: • Accessed through the database (random sampling) • Accessed through staff (opportunity sampling) • Approximately 10-12 interviews
Interim findings Mapping exercise • Small pockets of registered non use of services • A large number of unregistered use of services spread throughout the area with concentrations near the delivery points. Interviews with professionals and parents • This is a work in progress ! Seven interviews have been conducted to date and the findings are being transcribed and analysed using NVivo.
What will happen to the findings ? • The findings will be put into a report with recommendations and presented to the Programme Manager and the Partnership Board in September 2005. • It has been timetabled to coincide with a review of access to services and will also coincide with the arrival of two new project workers. • A pending journal article ?
