Context within Common Sense Avni Shah & Rebecca Bloom MAS.964 Project December 12, 2002
Motivation • Applications use common sense to assist users • For example, ARIA and SensiCal • Such an application is only as useful as the quality of the common sense information that it uses • Much common sense is only relevant within a certain context
Project Goal • Improve the quality of the existing information in OpenMind by adding context
Searching for Contextual Common Sense • Here, we searched for “ring”
Limitations • Original intent – find contradictory sentences • Easy to find sentences that are perfectly negated • happy vs sad, sick vs. healthy • Subtle contradictions require complex reasoning • driving/walking and driving/chewing gum
Further Work • Using WordNet in the search for contextual information • Linking directly to OpenMind • Maybe as another of OpenMind’s activities • Allowing the user to add “exceptions-to-the-rule”
