  2. The History of Art staff team is very small but all are research-active. We feed our research into the programme and inform students directly about research skills.

  3. The staff team take pains immediately to get to know the students as individuals. We know their interests inside and outside of university. It helps that they know we care genuinely about them.

  4. This knowledge about each student as an individual is valuable: we can see areas where they can push their research forward or how they can link their personal lives to university work- thus adding value to their studies.If students see the value in their work, and how it links to their personal lives, then they commit more deeply to it. The student on the left was always desperate to gain a placement at a museum in Venice- which we acquired for her.

  5. Students receive the usual feedback within 15 days but, in level 6, they have weekly assessment tasks and receive weekly feedback.

  6. There is no substitute for time and personal attention being given to the students. All the VLEs in the world are unable to replace personal attention. Our students know they are valued.

  7. In level 6 we have only 3 modules: one is 24 credits and two are 48 credits. This is because we have confidence in what we are doing. The students sense this confidence in the course held by the small core staff team.

  8. In level 6, although all students complete the same modules, the content of their work is highly personalised.E.g. 6006HA (Major Project) varies from curated exhibitions, teaching projects within schools, conservation of art works, web-design etc.

  9. To run a course in this way is easier if it is small. It must be difficult to offer as much personal attention and time if the programme is large. History of Art has about 20 people per level.

  10. To summarise, key issues are:* Give students attention and time.*Know students as individuals.* Allow students to personalise their work so they acquire a sense of ‘ownership’.
