An ellipsis is a punctuation mark made up of three dots. Something’s missing The rules state that players must pay admission…in order to win the prize.
1, 2, 3, … , 10 The ellipsis’s function is to show that something is missing. Have you seen an ellipsis used in math class?
An omission is something left out. When you leave out words in a quote, a story, or other writing, you must note the omission with an ellipsis. This alerts the reader that something is missing.

Why might writers leave information out? • Perhaps you are a reporter and do not have room for a lengthy quote. • Maybe you are writing research and part of the quote does not deal with your subject. • What other reasons did you discuss?
Your Turn Omit part of the quote and put in an ellipsis. “Cell phones, the highest selling electronic device of all time, caused 1,300 deaths last year in the state of California.”
ANSWER: “Cell phones … caused 1,300 deaths last year in the state of California.” Replace parts in red with ellipses. “Cell phones, the highest selling electronic device of all time, caused 1,300 deaths last year in the state of California.”
Don’t Lose the Intended Meaning Leaving out parts of a quote could change the the meaning altogether. **How could this get a writer in trouble? Discuss the ethics.
Keep the Meaning It is VERY important to leave the quote’s meaning intact. misleading 1.“Although cleared on all charges, Joseph is still considered a convicted felon.” 2.“… Joseph is still considered a convicted felon.” In #1, Joseph’s innocence is emphasized. In #2, only Joseph’s guilt is highlighted.
“Mary swore she would fully support her son’s business…” An ellipsis should NOT be used in this quote if the original quote states: “Mary swore she would fully support her son’s business, but only until the end of the week.” DISCUSS: Why should the writer leave the quote as it is?
Use an ellipsis in the following: 1. “The President, who had only been in office for five months, had to pardon the criminal.” 2.“Allan ate breakfast, brushed his teeth, put on his shoes, went to the mall and found a perfect suit.”
Final Note: The plural of ellipsis is ellipses.
