ASTR 1110General Astronomy:The Solar System Thursday, 02 June 2005
Announcements • No observing – bad weather • Voyager software not that great • Check out Distant Suns (http://www.distantsuns.com) • Get clicker by Monday!!!! • Let me know about project by today • Time to start homework • Monday, back in Duane • Ancient History, Timekeeping
Today’s Plan • Celestial Navigation • Phases of the Moon • Eclipses • Planets • More Constellations • SBO – Phase and Eclipse Activities
Find your Latitude • Pick any star at night • Or use Sun during the day IF you know what day it is. • Subtract Declination from Altitude to get Altitude of Celestial Equator • Subtract Altitude of Celestial Equator from 90° to get Latitude
Example • Vega: Dec = 38° 44’ • AltCE = Alt* - Dec*AltCE = 88° 44’ - 38° 44’AltCE = 50° • Lat = 90° - AltCELat = 90° - 50°Lat = 40°
