  2. Brief Background • Born in Boston on January 19, 1809 • When he was 3, his parents died and he was adopted into a wealthy family • Had dreams of being a writer like Lord Byron • Attended the University of Virginia • Died 2 years after his wife’s death in 1847 at the age of 40

Writing Career “I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity” Started out writing for Magazines and continued throughout his career Wrote poems, short stories, plays, essays and fiction Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque was his first book of short stories Published his first poem “The Raven” in January 1845
