  2. Bell Ringer • Based upon your research, what did you find out about the feminist literary theory?

  3. What is feminism? • The theory that sexes (males and females) should be equal politically, socially, and economically.

  4. Where did the Feminist Theory originate? • An extension of feminism. • Strives to understand gender inequality • Tries to give women more social justice.

  6. Advocates for Women’s Rights

  7. Mary Wollstonecraft • Founder of feminist philosophy • Work: A Vindication of the Rights of Women • She argues that women aren’t naturally inferior to men, but simply lack education that could make them equal to men. • Personal life: married Captain Gilbert Imaly, but a year later he abandoned her and she tried to drown herself.

  8. Simone de Beauvoir • Prominent French philosopher of the 20th century • Work: The Second Sex • Through out history women have been put into a passive role given them by a male dominated society. • Women are conditioned by the society they live in.

Analysis: Goodyear Ad. • Women need special tires to drive safe. • Women are worse drivers than men • While the Polyglass tires only help men to get more mileage on their tires, it helps the women “stay out of danger” from all the hazards driving has. • The music becomes tense when the woman is going to pick up her husband suggesting that you don’t know what comes next when the woman is behind the wheel.

  11. Points of Criticism • Differences between men and women • Gender determines everything, including values and language

  12. Women in positions of power and power dynamics between men and women • Note the division of labor and economics • Note how men and women interact in a variety of contexts (romantic, professional, etc.)

  13. The female experience • What aspects of feminine life are included in literature? • Through what point of view is the event told? Male or female? • How does the narrator treat the event? Sensitive or harsh?

  14. Rejection of applying male standards to female personality. • Examine and celebrate the creative life-giving role of femininity. • Explore the concept that men and women are both incomplete without each other.

  16. Applying Feminist Literary Criticism to Beloved With a partner, read p. 24-28 of Chapter 2 Create a double-entry journal. Find one event from the text to which you will apply the feminist literary criticism. Explain how that event connects to the theory.

  17. Homework • Read p. 24-33 (Chapter 2; begin partnerreading in class.) • Complete the double-entry journal by finding 2 events and providing explanations for each.
