#fluscenario Year 1 Respiratory Block/Public Health Dr Ellie Hothersall Deputy Systems in Practice Convenor University of Dundee e.hothersall@dundee.ac.uk
Purpose of #fluscenario • To introduce you to pandemic ‘flu and emergency planning • To develop an online learning conversation
#fluscenario • Based on previous work by #nhssm(NHS Social Media) • Original scenarios written by Mr Alex Talbott and Dr Chloe Sellwood
Structure • Private study periods: Scenario outlined at https://mbchb.dundee.ac.uk/fluscenario/ • Tutor will be online for the periods described for real time responses • Throughout block • @DundeePublicH on Twitter (expect a quick response 8am-8pm) • #fluscenario • Expect interaction from non-students
Private study periods • Times when real time response is available • Once a phase is posted feel free to keep commenting on it
Scenario • 4 phases of a ‘flu pandemic • Based on real events from “swine flu” • Based on scenarios written and run by #nhssm • No in-depth knowledge required – this is about getting involved, not learning all the details
Expectations • All students are required to contribute to all four phases, either through comments on the blog or twitter feed • Students who fail to engage adequately will be considered to be acting unprofessionally, and dealt with accordingly
Preparation • Sign up for Twitter and find your way around If you are new to it, some reasonable suggestions for ettiquette are here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture-professionals-network/culture-professionals-blog/2011/dec/15/twitter-rules-etiquette • Email your username and real name to me at e.hothersall@dundee.ac.uk if you want to leave it off your profile • Stick to the blogs if you want more privacy • IF YOU DON’T USE THE HASHTAG WE WON’T SEE IT
A gentle reminder about Twitter • Your text can be accessed by anyone in the world • Using #hashtags lets people follow a themed conversation • You are expected to remain professional but you don’t need to be formal • 140 characters is not a lot of text – abbreviations are ok, and you can also indicate that your text is carried on to a second tweet
Background Reading • Background reading that might be useful: • WHO Pandemic Influenza http://www.euro.who.int/en/what-we-do/health-topics/communicable-diseases/influenza/pandemic-preparedness • Description of UK flu planning http://www.hpa.org.uk/Topics/InfectiousDiseases/InfectionsAZ/PandemicInfluenza/
