  24. Reason 5: Big choice of hardware There are many types of PC suitable for use as an AAC device Sensory Software International - driving innovation in Assistive Technology All in one computer Any tablet PC with Windows Fizzbook A school laptop with folding touch screen

  25. Reason 5: Big choice of hardware Some of them were even designed as communication aids Sensory Software International - driving innovation in Assistive Technology

  26. Reason 5: Big choice of hardware We have developed solutions that build on standard machines, but provide all the functionality that is required Sensory Software International - driving innovation in Assistive Technology Physical protection Wheelchair mount Amplification Extra Battery Environment Control Switch input Fittings for Eye Gaze etc The Powerbox is a standard tablet computer With a “backbox”.

  27. Reason 5: Big choice of hardware Lets you use grids on a variety of mobile devices Sensory Software International - driving innovation in Assistive Technology Papoo Touch Grid Mobile 2 runs on CE based devices Jive T3 iPad (iPod, iPhone)

  28. Supporting writing and recording- Meet Katherine! • Katherine is now 11 years old. • Mainly needs physical access, has speech but lots of uncontrolled movement • She is bright and knows what she wants! Fiercely independent

  29. Implementation • Worked with switches and Clicker 5- hard work • Attends a really supportive primary school with a learning support assistant • Has regular visits from the communication and access specialist teacher • Katherine tried eye gaze about 3years ago- settled upon a Tobii P10 with The Grid 2

  30. Implementation • Katherine struggled with small targets Specialist teacher asked me to come and meet her! • It's not that bad after all - May 2009 • Katherine wanted to use a full keyboard for writing, but sometimes wasn’t accurate, especially when tired • Customised her keyboard. She needed thinking time! • Friday afternoon grid- a “two hit keyboard” • Harder when you are Tired • Friday Afternoon Grid

  31. Implementation • Friends helped her customise her rest cells Working in the class- Katherine in class 2009 • Gradually introduced new features and skills over two years • February 2010- new skills being introduced

  32. Moving on… • Katherine has a new device – A Tobii C15/ C-eye with Grid 2. • Katherine has moved from needing 6/8 cell grids to full computer control Katherine uses Kindle and mouse control • Using MS Word, Excel, web browsing, e-mailing and playing games • Katherine is now getting ready to move onto Secondary school • It let's me be independent
