Rounding - it’s all about keeping things simple . Rounding is a specific kind of estimating. So why is being able to round or estimate important anyway?. Can you give me an example?. Can I afford to go to San Antonio for the weekend?. Ok, so how do we round?.

Ok, so how do we round? • We can round to anyplace value • After rounding, the digit in the place we are rounding will either: • stay the same (round down) OR • increase by 1 (round up)
Steps to rounding like a pro • underline the number in the place value you want to round to. Example: round 123,491 to the thousands place • Circle the number directly to the right of that number Example: round 123,491 to the thousands place
Steps to rounding like a pro… 3. If the circled number is: • four or less, “let it rest”- leave the underlined number the way it is • This is called rounding down • Five or more, “up the score”- increase the underlined number by one • This is called rounding up Examples: 123,491 123,000 123,891 124,000
Steps to rounding like a pro 4. If you're dealing with a decimal number, drop all of the digits following the rounding digit. 15.871 to the nearest tenth = 15.9 If you're dealing with a whole number, all the digits to the right of the rounding digit become zero. 88,149 to the nearest thousand = 88,000
Examples of step 4 • Round 48.318 to the nearest hundredth 48.32 B) Round 34,121 to the nearest thousand 34,000
Round to the hundredths place 54.839 54.840
Round to the tenths place 15.647
Round to the ones place 3,348.59
Round to the ones place 149.814
Round to the thousandths place 498.5183
Round to the thousands place 47,134.19
Round to the tens place 519.581
Round to the tenths place 185.332
Round to the tenths place 421,280.871
