  1. “What God Hath Joined Together” “Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:6)

  2. “What God Hath Joined Together” Introduction

  3. Matthew 19:3-9 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? (4) And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, (5) And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? (6) Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. (7) They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? (8) He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. (9) And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

  4. Introduction • Jesus’ reply in vs. 6 is an important truth. • Occurred during reign of Herod Antipas • Who beheaded John the Baptist (Mk. 6:17-28) • Note the attitude of Pharisees in vs. 3. • Pharisees attempted to entrap Jesus • Possibly hoping He would loose His head • Attempted to put asunder what He stated in vss. 4-5. • In this lesson we will consider things that God has joined together that man attempts to put asunder.

  5. “What God Hath Joined Together” Introduction I. Union of Man & Woman in Lawful Marriage

  6. I. Union of Man & Woman in Lawful Marriage • God’s Law from the beginning: • Matt. 19:5-6; Gen. 2:24 • Union of one Man and one Woman for life • Law of Moses allowed divorce (Duet. 24:1-4): • Because of the hardness of their hearts • Jesus mandates His new law: • Divorce allowed ONLY for the cause of fornication - vs. 9 • “except it be for fornication” • “except” = If and only if • God allows only the faithful mate to remarry - vs. 9a • Put away mate not free to remarry - vs. 9b

  7. Matthew 19:5, 6 ~ Genesis 2:24 “…For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? (6) Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

  8. I. Union of Man & Woman in Lawful Marriage • God’s Will Regarding Marriage: • To be PERMANENT - Romans 7:2-3 • Bound as long as they live • The bond is by God and man cannot put it asunder • Death frees surviving mate to marry again • Must be based on COMMITMENT • To leave and cleave - Matt. 19:5; Gen. 2:24 • “Cleave” means to join fast together, to glue or cement - W. E. Vine • “The permanence which God requires is the basis for the commitment” - Donnie V. Rader • Marriage is “honorable” - Heb. 13:4 • Must love & honor each other & be in submission to God’s marriage law - Eph. 5:22-29

  9. Romans 7:2-3 “For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. (3) So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.”

  10. I. Union of Man & Woman in Lawful Marriage • Man attempts to put God’s law asunder: • Divorce for any cause OR without a cause (No fault divorce) • “Bad breath - burning the biscuits” • Remarriage permitted only if mate dies • Irreconcilable differences • Baptism justifies an unlawful marriage • Believer forsaken by unbeliever free to marry • Both mates in a divorce are free to remarry • Guilty mate can remarry • Mental divorce position • Homosexual/Same-sex marriages

  11. 1 Corinthians 7:2Applied to Mark 6:17-18 “every man have his OWN wife” “every woman have her OWNhusband” Philip T H I S God’s law would not join them! Matt. 19:9 Mark 6:18 Herodias Not This Herod “For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife” (Mark 6:17, 18).

  12. God's Marriage Law ONE Man For ONE Woman For Life! Gen. 2:24, 25 Matt 19:4-6 Only ONE Exception For Divorce! Except (IF & ONLY IF ) for Fornication! Matt. 19:9 Matt. 5:32 ADULTERY Rom. 7:2, 3 FORNICATION Incest Bestiality Lesbianism Prostitution Pedophilia Homosexuality Fornication - "Prostitution, unchastity, fornication, of every kind of unlawful intercourse." (Walter Bauer, A Greek - English Lexicon Of The New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, p. 693) Thayer says, "prop. of illicit sexual intercourse in general." (P. 532). Generally, the word "fornication" refers to unlawful sexual intercourse of the unmarried (in order to avoid fornication, one is to marry - 1 Cor. 7:2-5). However, the term is applied also to illicit sexual conduct of married people (1 Cor. 5:1; Rev. 2:20).

  13. “What God Hath Joined Together” Introduction I. Union of Man & Woman in Lawful Marriage II. Faith and Works

  14. II. Faith and Works • The doctrine of “salvation by faith only” is a popular doctrine. • “Works” commanded by God are the “works” under consideration. • Those who put asunder faith and works must explain: • Philippians 2:12 • Acts 2:40 • John 6:28-29 • Why those mentioned in Hebrews 11 were faithful • James 2:14-24 • Acts 2:38; Mark 16:16; Acts 10:48 • Ephesians 2:8-10 • Matthew 7:21-23 • Titus 1:16 • 2 Timothy 3:16, 17

  15. Hiscox’s Baptist Manual • “…Justification…is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood” (p. 140). “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost”(Titus 3:5)

  16. Philippians 2:12 “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, workout your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

  17. Acts 2:40 “And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.”

  18. John 6:28-29 “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? (29) Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

  19. The Faithful of Hebrews 11 Abel - vs. 4 Enoch - vs. 5 Noah - vs. 7 Abraham - vss. 8-19 Isaac - vs. 20 Joseph - vs. 22 Moses - vss. 23-28 Israelites - vss. 29-30 Rahab - vs. 31 Others - vss. 32-40 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (vs. 6). Did those mentioned in Hebrew 11 do any works? (Jas. 2:20-24; Gen. 22:11, 12)

  20. James 2:20-24 “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? (21) Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? (22) Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? (23) And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

  21. Apostle James v. Edward T. Hiscox • Hiscox’s Baptist Manual • “…Justification…is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood” (p. 140). James 2:24 “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.” “…that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written…”(1 Corinthians 4:6)

  22. Ephesians 2:8-10 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

  23. Matthew 7:21-23 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

  24. Titus 1:16 “They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.”(NKJV)

  25. 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

  26. “What God Hath Joined Together” Introduction I. Union of Man & Woman in Lawful Marriage II. Faith and Works III. God & Christ

  27. III. God and Christ • Many “believe” God but deny Christ is the Son of God: • Jews (Matt. 27:22, 23; Jn. 1:11) • Muslims • Jehovah’s Witnesses Deny Jesus was God • Others

  28. Matt. 27:22, 23 ~ Jn. 1:11 “Pilate said to them, "What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said to him, "Let Him be crucified!" Then the governor said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they cried out all the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!” (NKJV) “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” (NKJV)

  29. “Jehovah's Witnesses” Error • “…the true Scriptures speak of God’s Son, the Word, as ‘a god.’ He is a ‘mighty god,’ but not the Almighty God who is Jehovah.”(The Truth Shall Make You Free, Brooklyn: Watchtower Bible and Track Society, 1943, p. 47) • “In other words, he was the first and direct creation of Jehovah God” (The Kingdom Is at Hand, Brooklyn: Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, 1944, pp. 46, 47, 49). A Denial of the Deity of Christ! John 1:1-14; Philippians 2:5-11

  30. III. God and Christ • Many “believe” God but deny Christ is the Son of God: • Jews (Matt. 27:22, 23; Jn. 1:11) • Muslims • Jehovah’s Witnesses Deny Jesus was God • Others • Many deny His doctrine (Tit. 1:16; 2 Tim. 2:12) • John 14-17 reveals the perfect unity of God and Christ • Not possible to deny Christ and Accept the Father • Matt. 10:32-33, 40 TO DENY CHRIST IS TO DENY GOD!

  31. Titus 1:16 ~ 2 Timothy 2:12 “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.” “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us”

  32. Matthew 10:32-33, 40 “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. (33) But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven” “He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.”

  33. “What God Hath Joined Together” Introduction I. Union of Man & Woman in Lawful Marriage II. Faith and Works III. God & Christ IV. Christ and the Church

  34. IV. Christ & The Church • Many religionist teach the “Man not the Plan” • Do not value the Church as being important. • Billy Graham’s (BGEA) 4-Step process: • Step 1: God's Purpose: Peace and Life • Step 2: The Problem: Our Separation • Step 3: God's Bridge: The Cross • Step 4: Our Response - Here’s How You Receive Christ: • Admit your need (I am a sinner). • Be willing to turn from your sins (repent). • Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the Cross and rose from the grave. • Through prayer, invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your life through the Holy Spirit. (Receive Him as Lord and Savior.) Source: http://www.billygraham.org/SH_StepsToPeace.asp

  35. IV. Christ & The Church “How to Pray” - The Sinner’s Prayer According Billy Graham “Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe that You died for my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I now invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as Lord and Savior. In Jesus' name. Amen.” “Worship, fellowship, and serve with other Christians in a church where Christ is preached” (Billy Graham). Question: What about Acts 8:26-40? Especially vss.35 & 36?

  36. IV. Christ & The Church • They Put asunder Christ and the Church which: • He established - Matt. 16:18 • He calls His - Matt. 16:18 • He is the Head of - Eph. 1:22-23 • He Is the Savior of - Eph. 5:23 • He bled and died for - Eph. 5:25 • He loves - Eph. 5:25 • Is His Bride - Eph. 5:32

  37. Matt. 16:18 ~ Eph. 1:22, 23 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” “And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, (23) Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.”

  38. IV. Christ & The Church The Consequences of the “Man not the Plan”

  39. “What God Hath Joined Together” V. Christ and the Apostles

  40. V. Christ & the Apostles • Some rely on their “red letter” editions • Deny the promise of the Holy Spirit: • Jn. 14:26; 15:26; 16:13 • Acts 1:2, 8

  41. John 14:26; 15:26; 16:13 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me” Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come”

  42. Acts 1:1-2, 8 “The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, (2) Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen” “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

  43. V. Christ & the Apostles • Some rely on their “red letter” editions • Deny the promise of the Holy Spirit • Jn. 14:26; 15:26; 16:13 • Acts 1:2, 8 • This makes Paul a liar - Paul claimed inspiration! • Gal. 1:11-12; Eph. 3:1-3; 1 Cor. 2:9-13

  44. Gal. 1:11-12; Eph. 3:3-5 “But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. (11) For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” “How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, (4) Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) (5) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit”

  45. 1 Cor. 2:10-13 “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

  46. V. Christ & the Apostles • Some rely on their “red letter”editions • Deny the promise of the Holy Spirit • Jn. 14:26; 15:26; 16:13 • Acts 1:2, 8 • Makes Paul a liar - Paul claimed inspiration • Gal. 1:11-12; Eph. 3:1-3; 1 Cor. 2:9-13 • Only the Apostles were the “Ambassadors of Christ” • 2 Cor. 5:18-20 • Paul claimed Ambassadorship - Eph. 6:20 • And so does Billy Graham • http://www.billygraham.org/articlepage.asp?articleid=8915 • “Billy Graham: God’s Ambassador”

  47. 2 Cor. 5:20 ~ Eph. 6:20 “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.” “For which I am an ambassadorin bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”

  48. “Ambassador” Defined “An official envoy; especially: a diplomatic agent of the highest rank accredited to a foreign government or sovereign as the resident representative of his own government or sovereign or appointed for a special and often temporary diplomatic assignment.” Source: Webster’s on-line dictionary

  49. Hodge on “Ambassadors” "An ambassador is at once a messenger and a representative. He does not speak in his own name. He does not act on his own authority. What he communicates is not his own opinions or demands, but simply what he has been told or commissioned to say. His message derives no part of its importance or trustworthiness from him. At the same time he is more than a mere messenger. He represents his sovereign. He speaks with authority, as accredited to him in the name of his master." Charles Hodge, Commentary on the Second Epistle to the Corinthians, (p. 146)

  50. Macknight on “Ambassador” "Christ was God's chief ambassador and the apostles being commissioned by Christ, were his substitutes (ambassadors-gm). The same obedience, therefore, was due to them in matters of religion, as to Christ himself." James Macknight, Macknight on the Epistles, p. 227 comments on 2 Corinthians 5:20
