2. Introduction • I grew up in Michigan and received my bachelor and master’s degrees from Michigan State University. This summer I completed my educational specialist from Lincoln Memorial University. I am a HUGE Spartan fan. • After completing a year long internship in a 1st grade classroom in Michigan, I moved to Georgia and began working at JCE. This is my 7th year here and my 6th year teaching 2nd grade. • I have experience working with kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. • This is truly a very rewarding and fulfilling job for me because of YOUR children!

3. JAGUARSClass Behavior Plan • “Love and Logic”-respect and logical consequences. Teach kids to think for themselves, take responsibility and become problem solvers. -Helping students to come up with solutions to solve their own problems -Instilling personal responsibility in students • Passport- school-wide behavior plan

4. Passports • School wide discipline plan • Orange passports will go home on Fridays for parents to initial unless there is a behavior issue that needs to be addressed that day • Specials teachers and lunch monitors may also write in your child’s passport if there is an issue

8. Weekly Homework Assignments: • Monday: Reading Comprehension, study spelling • Tuesday: Math ws • Wednesday: RAZ Kids, study +/- • Thursday: Study for weekly spelling test, practice math concept of the week, and timed math fluency • Friday: READ *Homework can always change weekly due to the instruction students need with each standard.

Numerical Grades for Academics 1 = Limited or minimal progress toward achievement of the standard 2 = Sometimes demonstrates achievement in the standard 3 = Consistently demonstrates Achievement in the standard 4= Mastery of Achievement in the standard Key to Initiative and Work Standards (Responsibility, Participation, Assignment Completion, Interpersonal Skills) Exemplary (E)=Above the standard, a leader, thinking beyond expectations Successful (S) = The standard, self-starter, engaged, completes work on time, gets along with others Does Not Meet (N) = Struggles to focus, needs frequent redirection and reminders, does not complete work on time Report CardAssesses Forsyth County Standards and Benchmarks

10. Grading • Expect 1s and 2s for first half • 4 – Extends/Excels • 3 – Consistent Mastery • Many tasks are graded by an end-of-year expectation

11. Four Blocks Literacy Model • Phonics • Guided Reading • Writers Workshop • Sustained Silent Reading (SSR or D.E.A.R)

12. Phonics • Daily Phonics Skill Practice -Builds reading and writing skills • Word Chunks • Spelling Patterns

13. Weekly Spelling • Every Monday students will receive a new spelling list to write in their agenda • This year students will have individual spelling lists from a word bank that the class generates on a specific skill (ex. Compound words, double consonants, etc.) • They are to study their spelling (and sight) words at home daily in order for them to master the list • There will be word work done in class throughout the week for spelling practice • Spelling tests will be given every Friday

Reading Small Group Reading - homogeneous by level (Q1-J) - focuses on specific skills and reading instruction -literature circles Large Group Reading - heterogeneous - enables students to interact and learn about reading from each other - stories from Common Core Curriculum Book Buddies -5th graders

15. ELA • Common Core Standards will continue to be used during the 2013-14 school year • All lessons will be taught along a common thread that students will see in each grade level • Lessons will integrate science, math, and social studies curriculum along with fine tuning comprehension, fluency, and enriching vocabulary • Students will continue decoding skills and develop their ability to become a writer that shows their voice and style • Students will read more non-fiction than in the past and be expected to show evidence from their reading when answering questions

16. Technology • B.Y.O.T. (Bring your own technology) • All classes will be participating this year • Technology can include DS, itouch, laptops, ipods, etc. • Technology will be used for educational purposes • Reading Assessments • Interactive Games • Web quests (research) • Discussion Boards

17. Writer’s Workshop(Writing Process & Grammar) • Writer’s Workshop incorporates grammar skills into learning the writing process • Lucy Calkins Writing (Focusing on 2nd grade standards- developing ideas, organization, voice, word choice, etc.) • Mini-Lessons & Writing Blocks - mini-lesson / modeling - writing session & teacher conferencing Writing Focuses: Narrative, Expository, Persuasive, Response to Literature: text to self, text to text, text to world

18. Math Standards-based approach -The frameworks emphasize key standards and big ideas at specific times of the year -Students are expected to explain their thinking and compare problems (ex. different numbers, representations, etc.) -3-6 week Units -Standards more in depth and we will study for a longer period of time - Real World Applications & Problem Solving - Math Centers -Math Games -Math Practice Books -Computer quizzes -3-Minute Fact Practice

20. Science Lab • Parent volunteers will help set up and conduct experiments and investigations, enabling us to teach more hands on lessons • Ms. Fernando has volunteered to be our science coordinator this year. We will be in touch soon.
