Physical Scientist & Cancer Biologist How can I culture Physical Scientists & Cancer Biologists to work together? Max Delbrück • “helped many physicists make the transition to biology” • They encouraged other investigators in the field to concentrate on seven bacteriophages ... That way, experimental results from different laboratories could be compared.
PS-OC Program Goal and Vision • The Specific Purpose for the PS-OC Initiative: • To generate new knowledgeand catalyze new fields of studyin cancer research by utilizing physical sciences/engineering principles to enable a better understanding of cancer and its behavior at all scales. • Not looking for new tools to do “better” science, but new perspectives and approaches to do paradigm-shifting science that will lead to exponential progress against cancer. • Build trans-disciplinary teams and infrastructure to better understand and control cancer through the convergence • of physical sciences and cancer biology. New – “Schools of Thought”

PS-OC Mechanism • U54 (Cooperative Agreement Specialized Center) • Facilitate and enable the convergence of the physical sciences with cancer biology/clinical oncology to understand cancer at a fundamental level. • Active coordination by program managers trained in physical and cancer sciences. • Accelerate ‘cycle of learning’ through shared resource core facilities. • Provide linkages to key NCI programs and resources

Prospective Evaluation of PS-OCs Unique Program Unique Evaluation • Goal:Collect data during the Program for ongoing monitoring and feedback • Are the Program’s objectives and priorities being met by progress to date? • Bring physical scientists to cancer research • Form trans-disciplinary teams • Convergence of Physical Sciences and Oncology fields • Paradigm shifting science • What aspects of the Program should be changed? • Does the potential for future progress merit continued investment by NCI in the PS-OCs?
Data Collection of Network • Data Collection Methods: • Interviews with Investigators prior to start of program • Progress Reports • Progress of research towards aims • All personnel list • Publications, Presentations, Patents • List of trainees (including discipline) • Student exchanges and transitions • New collaborations within Center, within Network, or outside Network • Information collected from Investigators outside progress reports Semi-Annual ~70-80 pages 3 reports to date
Data Model • Visual representation of the structure of the progress report data • Used to formally describe data relationships Example relationships: • Which peoplecontributedto a project? • Which projects does a progress report identify? • Which publications has a person written?
SQL Database • Stores data entered through the Data Entry User Interface • Entered data can be queried to support charting and data export in the Analysis User Interface Data Entry User Interface Database
Evaluation Metrics • Investigators and Trainees • Network and Center Collaborations • Trans-Disciplinary Authorship Collaborations • Field Convergence (Physical Sciences/Oncology) • Time series analysis of Physical Sciences and Oncology term concurrent in the literature • Types of publications that investigators are generating • Types of journals that investigators are publishing (before/after)
