Green Motors Review of Existing Deemed Savings Regional Technical Forum July 7th, 2009
Background • The Green Motors Practices Group (GMPG) encourages high quality motor rewind practices to save energy. Green Motors Service Centers sign a commitment to follow the Green Motors rewind protocol and the GMPG follows up with QC/QA. • Concept proposed to RTF May 2007. Deemed savings originally approved July 2007, slightly revised July 2008.
Savings Calculation: Key Inputs • Baseline Motor Efficiency = NEMA Premium Efficiency – Standard Rewind Efficiency Reduction Table: Standard Rewind Efficiency Reductions Original Source: MotorMaster+ Manual (p. 31: ≤40 hp = 1%; >40 hp = 0.5%) Another Source: “The Effect of Repair/Rewinding on Motor Efficiency”, EASA/AEMT (p. 1-5: 6 motors in 100-150hp range rewound without controls lost 0.6% efficiency) • “Upgrade” Motor Efficiency = NEMA Premium Efficiency • Assumed Motor Loading: <100 hp = 60%; ≥100 hp = 70% Source: “Achieving More with Less: Efficiency and Economics of Motor Decision Tools”, Advanced Energy. (Study of 100 motors showed average loading of 68.2%) • Hours of Operation Industrial Source: United States Industrial Electric Motor Systems Market Opportunities Assessment, published by US Department of Energy December 1999, Motor Challenge, see Section 1, page 42 Agriculture < 100 hp = 1800 hrs/year; ≥ 100 hp = 2000 hrs/year
Economics Note: Preliminary estimated 6th Plan cutoff for cost-effectiveness is about 120 mils/kWh for lost-opportunity measures.
Decision • Continue with deemed savings numbers? • Any adjustments?
