  1. MINOS WBS 2.3: Electronics, DAQ and Database Status Accomplishments since May. 2003 review Near Detector Electronics production Costs Peter Shanahan Department of Energy Review of the NuMI Project MINOS Parallel Session Nov. 15, 2003

  2. Overview of 2.3 Status • Schedule Status (BCWP/Total Budget): • 96.7% complete • Electronics, DAQ, and Database • Steady progress on Data Acquisition, Detector Control System, and Database • Thorough workout at CALDET • Near Detector Electronics • Near Detector – Assembly of all items wrapping up • Exceptions: MINDER crate, minor clock components • Checkout in Progress

  3. WBS 2.3 Accomplishments Since May 2003 Review • MINOS WBS Milestones: • WBS 2.3.1.0.MS.7 Complete shipping for CALDET • completed on time, 7/10/03 • WBS 2.3.0.MS.2 Near Electronics Ready for Installation • completed 1 month early, 9/15/03 – includes equipment in use at CALDET • Successful calibration run with Near Detector (ND) Electronics at CALDET • First time DAQ used 2 ND readout crates • Tested Spill Mode of ND FEE, and other features for 1st time • Assembly and checkout well along on all major components • Exception: Problem with MINDER (“Front End”) Crate production

  4. Upcoming Schedule Milestones Grain of salt for Floats: -2.3.0.MS.4 is last card completed – doesn’t distinguish 50% done from 99% done -2.3.1.0.MS.8 allows for commissioning detector planes with electronics long after they go in

  5. DAQ Progress and Status • CALDET Run • Major effort for DAQ group • Experience being fed-back into planning for Near Detector Commissioning. • Far Detector • Data taking since 2001 • Operations mode since August, 2003 • Near Detector • DAQ Workshop at RAL Scheduled for December to plan for intallation • FNAL Control room has been commissioned • Shifts taken for CALDET at CERN and FARDET

  6. Near Detector Electronics MINDER modules MINDER Crate MASTER Module Trigger/Keeper Component Count (not counting ~10% spares, light injection): 9328 MENUS 583 MINDERS 81 MASTERS MASTER Crate

  7. Near Detector Electronics Status • Schedule Status (BCWP/Total Budget): • 93% September 03 (85% March 03) • Highlights • Met CALDET schedule • MENU production and checkout nearly complete • MASTER, KEEPER, MINDER production 98% complete • Checkout held up on MINDERs for feedback from CALDET • Issues • MINDER (Front End) Crates • Poor mechanical structure in 1st articles • Apparent resolution failed to translate into production quality. • End of CALDET travel will allow more focus on this problem

  8. Near Detector Electronics Status

  9. MENUs • Earlier production problems resolved • Checkout help from IIT undergrads • High pass rate on checkout

  10. CALDET • Sept.-Oct. 2003 • 1 side of each channel read-out with Near Detector Electronics • Tested SPILL mode (continuous data taking for 10ms) • Thorough test of system at 15% level • Provided much feedback for diagnostics and firmware Time of Flight p,m,e,p 0.5-9 GeV/c Cerenkov Steel/Scintillator

  11. 2003 CALDET Run • Preliminary look at electrons in detector • Compare sum of energy for Near Det and Far Det electronics, event-by-event • With preliminary calibrations, ND and FD agree to <2% • Expect improvements with full analysis FD-ND/0.5(FD+ND) P (GeV/c) FD-ND/0.5(FD+ND) P (GeV/c) Known miscalibrated channel causes this shift FD-ND/0.5(FD+ND)

  12. Cost Variance in WBS 2.3 • WBS 2.3.1 has $384 K favorable cost variance • $994 K in May 2003 review was known to be largely artificial • Due to statusing of production orders when placed • Possible true favorable cost variances • Estimated ~$140K on parts and assembly in May 2003 review • Now appears ~$100K. • MENU Checkout • Faster, with less project labor than anticipated • Used existing components for much of teststand systems in budget. • Possible $100+K favorable variance

  13. Budget Overruns • Travel for FNAL engineers and physicists to CALDET: ~$20k • Tech and Engineer Labor • Clock system – possible c. $50k overrun • Checkout of rest of system – implementing lessons learned from CALDET (may still be within budget) • Other MINOR overruns • We expect that these will be offset by true underruns.

  14. Summary • Great progress in WBS 2.3 since May 2003 Review • Near Detector Front End Electronics reaching end of assembly • NDFEE checkout well along • CALDET RUN: • ND DAQ given thorough workout at CALDET • 1st Test of beam mode for NDFEE Data taking • Quality of data appears much better than 2003 • Overall budget appears sufficient • Need to clean up individual cost accounts for over- and under-runs
