Significance of WHS in the Disability Sector The National OHS Strategy 2002-2012 identifies 5 priority industries, based on a combination of high incidence rates and high employment. • Agriculture, forestry and fishing • Health & community services (H&CS) • Construction • Manufacturing • Transport & storage • From 2002/03 to 2008/09, the H&CS industry has recorded the second lowest improvement in the incidence rate of serious injury. • In 2008-09, the H&CS industry employed about 11% of the Australian workforce (1,136,200 people) but was responsible for 14% of all serious workers’ compensation claims.
From 2002/03 to 2008/09, within the H&CS industry, the incidence rates of serious injury: Increased 3% in the community care services sector 1% in veterinary services Decreased 2% in child care services 20% in other health services (pathology, community health centres & ambulance services) 25% in hospitals and nursing homes 34% in medical and dental services Most common causes of compensated injury & disease in the H&CS industry (2008-09): • Muscular stress due to manual handling or repetitive movement – 52% claims • Falls, trips and slips of a person – 18% claims • Being hit by moving objects – 11% claims
