Here is the plan… • Students will see how imperialism and nationalism have influenced the political and geographic shape of the ME. • Students will understand the impact that World War I had on the ME. • Students will be able to define the term “economic imperialism”.
Read • The opening section of Chapter #26 – Section #4 on page #583. • WOW me by applying the term Nationalism and the term Imperialism to the Suez Canal.
BYE, BYE, BYE! • World War I was the “Final Blow” for the Ottoman Empire. • The breakup of the empire drastically altered the political and geographic boundaries of the Middle East.

Turkey • Turkey was able to achieve and maintain its independence after WWI because of strong leadership and pro western reforms
Egypt • In the early 1800’s, Egypt struggled to become independent under Muhammad Ali. • Western economic interests eventually led to British forces occupying the country in the late 1800’s.
Betrayed • During World War I, some Arabs helped the British fight the Ottomans. By doing this, the Arabs hoped to achieve their Independence.

Iran • Reza Khan set up the Pahlavis Dynasty – a pro western / modern government – in Iran. • The last Shah of Iran, who was supported by the United States, was forced into exile in 1979.
Islamic Fundamentalism • Islamic Fundamentalism is in part a reaction against Westernization AND Modernization.
