ECOFATTING Technical future issues • ACTION 6: Environmental demonstration of natural products fatting at a pre-industrial level • ACTION 7: Environmental demonstration of hides fatted with natural products • ACTION 8: Study of the demonstration about the environmental benefits from the natural products fatting process • ACTION 9: Quality assessment of leather products production • ACTION 10: Demonstration of technical-economic viability • ACTION 11: Natural products fatting manual • ACTION 12:Leather sample books of hides fatted with natural products
ECOFATTING Technical future issues • ACTION 6: Environmental demonstration of natural products fatting at a pre-industrial level • Description: • The leather produced in previous Actions will be tanned with the natural products technique in the fatting phase by means of collaborating with Italian and Spanish tanneries that will be selected from those interested. ICCOMCNR will conduct a product assessment of the leather samples produced with the new method and will finalize the environmental product characterization of the leather produced with the treated leather.
ECOFATTING Technical future issues • Methods employed: • COLORTEX, SERICHIM and INESCOP will be involved in: • Industrial-scale production of sheep/goat leather treated with innovative natural products formulations in the fatting phase. • Product characterization. • Industrial-scale production of bovine leather treated with innovative natural products formulations in the fatting phase.. • Product characterization. • ICCOMCNR and ENEA will be involved in: • Environmental assessment of the new fatting process in tanning cycle using internationally accepted standards.
ECOFATTING Technical future issues • Expected results: • sheep/goat skins leathers tanned with the use of natural products in the fatting phase. • bovine skins leathers tanned with the use of natural products in the fatting phase. • analysis of the environmental impact from the hide tanning process by using natural products instead of cloroparaffines in the fatting phase
ECOFATTING Technical future issues • ACTION 7: Environmental demonstration of hides fatted with natural products • Description: • The hides produced by the Italian and Spanish tanneries will be used by Italian and Spanish leather manufacturer companies, chosen from those interested, to manufacture different leather products. Immediately afterwards, a comparison will be made between the natural products fatted hides and cloroparaffines fatted hides, taking into account the voluntary limits imposed by the European Eco-label for ecological criteria (Decision 2002/231/CE) and other chemical parameters of environmental interest (pH, etc.). To achieve this, validations of harmful substances that could be present in hides will be carried out. The validation results will be written in a report.
ECOFATTING Technical future issues Methods employed: • ICCOMCNR, INESCOP and ENEA will be involved in: • Production of different types of leather products • Validations of harmful substances in hides based on international standards. • Expected results: • 100 leather products elaborated with natural products fatted leathers. • Production of more environmentally friendly leather products, that complies with the European Eco-label criteria
ECOFATTING Technical future issues • ACTION 8: Study of the demonstration about the environmental benefits from the natural products fatting process All the information gathered from earlier actions, as well as results and conclusions, will be logged in a study. To achieve this, INESCOP will send reports to ICCOMCNR in which the results will be contained from the production validations carried out in the Spanish companies, as well as the results of the comparison between leather products manufactured from natural products fatted hides and cloroparaffines fatted hides. This study will contain photos of the leather products manufactured, and will contain samples of natural products tanned hides at a semi-industrial and pre-industrial level.
ECOFATTING Technical future issues • ACTION 9:Quality assessment of leather products production A check will be made to verify that hides fatted with natural products satisfy leather products quality standards. To achieve this, physical validations (tensile strength, resistance to wear, contraction temperature, etc.) will be carried out on hides produced to manufacture leather products in Italy and in Spain. These validations will be carried out in COLORTEX, SERICHIM and INESCOP laboratories, which are equipped to carry out these types of assessments. The results will be logged in a report.
ECOFATTING Technical future issues • ACTION 10:Demonstration of technical-economic viability • This Action will foresee a deep analysis in order to prove that hides tanned with the new natural products method comply with quality standards and are economically viable.
ECOFATTING Technical future issues • ACTION 11:Natural products fatting manual • This Action will foresee the production of a formative manual which explains how to apply the new natural products fatting technique to the industrial process in tanneries.
ECOFATTING Technical future issues • ACTION 12:Leather sample books of hides fatted with natural products • This Action will foresee the production of hide sample books tanned with the new natural products fatting technique, which can be shown at different events.
