PATT: a short history Marc J. de Vries
PATT: a tradition of thirty years • Started in 1983 with a small international workshop on attitude research • Continued and extended in scope • Thematic conferences • Became allied with ITE(E)A Annual Conferences, but also kept its original character (alternating conferences) • Proceedings as products available to all
A short PATT history • 1983: PATT workshop in Eindhoven, the Netherlands • PATT = Pupils’ Attitudes Towards Technology • 1984: PATT-2 conference • . . . • PATT as an international platform for discussing development and research in technology education • Conferences in various places of the world • PATT-sessions at ITE(E)A conference • 27-29 March 2014, Orlando, FL • . . . • 2012: PATT-26 in Stockholm • And now: PATT in Christchurch, New Zealand
Any connections with the origin of PATT (the Netherlands)? Yes! • 1642: Abel Tasman from the Netherlands discovers what he calls ‘Nieuw-Zeeland’. • Not a great success: fight with Maori because of miscommunication • But maybe it was a success after all: • Nieuw Amsterdam was sold for almost nothing and became New York (only the name Breukelen survived) • Nieuw-Holland (1644, same Abel Tasman) became Australia • But: Nieuw-Zeeland became: New Zealand!
The Ten Commandments of PATT • Thou shalt not apologise for thy English • There shall be no or almost no parallel sessions • Thou shalt not sneak away during the conference • Thou shalt stay in the same hotel as where the sessions are held • Thou shalt not give long, formal introductions to presenters, except perhaps for special, invited speakers • Thou shalt not use up all the time for thy own voice, but also leave time for discussion with thy neighbor • Thou shalt treat thy colleague attendants almost as family members • Thou shalt make available a text for the Proceedings • Thou shalt pay all thy bills in time and not bother the organisers with that • Thou shalt sincerely intend to come back to the next PATT conference
Future PATT-s • 2015, 8-11 April, Marseille, France • http://espe.univ-amu.fr/fr/patt-conference-2015 • 2017: China? • 2017: Utrecht, Netherlands? • 2018: Limerick, Ireland?
I wish you all an enjoyable, useful and inspiring PATT-New Zealand conference Thank you
