About Myself • I have a BS(Hons)degree in Physiology from University of Karachi • ECE Units from De Anza College • CBEST • Taught in Pakistan from Grade 1-5 for 2 years • Taught Grades 6-9 General Science and Biology for 8 years in Pakistan • Worked at KinderCare as a Kindergarten Teacher for one and a half year • Taught at Challenger as a Kindergarten Teacher for 3 years • Working at Granada Islamic since last 8 years • I am married and have 2 children
GRANADA ISLAMIC SCHOOL’S MISSION STATEMENT • The mission of Granada Islamic School is to provide quality academic and Islamic education in a community that nurtures a strong Muslim identity, fosters brotherhood, and strengthens moral character.
ATTENDANCE & DISMISSAL • Students should arrive to school by 7:45 am every morning. Class begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. Please drop your child to school on time. • If your child arrives after 8:30 a.m., please sign in at the receptionist (front desk) upon entering the school. • Dismissal: is at 3:15 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wed dismissal is at 2:00 p.m.
Tardiness • If students are tardy, they miss valuable teaching time that can’t be made up. • Students who receive 10 or more tardies in the trimester will have their first period subject grade reduce by one letter grade(10%). Please refer to your Parent Handbook for more information on this policy.
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL • If it is necessary for your child to leave school early, please send a note in the morning so I am aware of this. Also, please notify the receptionist upon entering the school. • If your child will not be coming to school, please notify the office before 8:00 a.m.
UNIFORM • Your child must wear his/her uniform to school (unless otherwise directed). • Please refer to the Parent/Student Handbook for correct uniform details.
Health and Illness • Your child should not come to school if he/ she has any of symptoms listed in the Parent/ Student Handbook. • Please administer any medication your child is taking (temporarily or long-term) before and after school.
PARENT /TEACHER RELATIONSHIP • In order to achieve maximum success, a strong parent- teacher relationship is necessary. Throughout the year, I will communicate through e-mail, webpage, notes, telephone calls, letters and conferences. I encourage you to contact me with any questions or concerns also. VOLUNTEERS • Your support of school activities make your child feel important and sends the message that you value school. • It is important that your child sees you have interest in their school environment. • Please sign up on the Volunteer Form before leaving this evening.

DISCIPLINE In “1A” CLASSROOM • GREEN LIGHT: Your child is following the rules correctly. • YELLOW LIGHT: WARNING Your child was not following the rules. The student will be asked to explain/or show how the action can be corrected. • RED LIGHT: Your child is still not following the rules. Time will be taken from your child’s indoor play time.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER RED LIGHT? • If the problem persists: • Parent Notifications: Parents will be notified if a child’s behavior/ actions continue to interfere with the conduct of the class. • There will be “Zero Tolerance” for any form of violence at school. • Your child’s behavior will be recorded.
Staying on green incentives • If your child stays on green throughout the week then your child will pick something from the treasure box on Friday
INCENTIVES • The students will be earning Class Points for being good listeners and effective workers. They have to work as a team to earn these class points. Once they earn 100 Class Points, they will have a party. • They will vote for the choice of party they would like, and we will rotate the choices. • Some choices are ice-cream party, popsicle party, popcorn party, pizza party, and extra recess.
ALLERGY ALLERT • Please be sure to inform me if your child is allergic to anything.
LUNCHES • First grade students eat their snack inside and lunch in the cafeteria. • Please ensure that your child has a lunch and a snack daily. • Also please send extra snack for the afternoon • Foods with good nutritional value are always best.
CLASSROOM RULES • There are many other rules that we follow in the school environment (ex; raising our hand to answer a question, walking in the hallway…) however, I chose to list a minimal amount of important items on the classroom rules so the list is not overwhelming to the students and accomplishing the list seems tangible.
HOMEWORK • Homework is a reinforcement of material learned in class. Your child should be able to complete homework on his/her own. You may read the directions to your child. • Homework will be sent home every Monday and is to be returned the following Monday(unless otherwise mentioned) • Math homework is assigned daily and must be returned the next morning.
HOMEWORK • Please follow the homework schedule on the front of each package. • Late homework will be accepted for a valid excuse such as illness. • Unexcused late homework will be accepted by Tuesday and 2 points will be deducted. Homework will not be accepted after Tuesday.
LA Curriculum • We will be doing 6 themes in first grade • There will be a Theme Test at the end of each theme: Theme Tests weightage is 30% • Writing workshops: • Riddles • Personal Narratives • Descriptive Writing Using Sensory Language • Research Reports • Letter Writing • Poems
Math Curriculum • We have adopted a new version of Saxon Math this year • We will be taking some parts of second grade curriculum to challenge students for academic excellence • Students will master all basic addition and subtraction facts by the end of first grade • Math homework is assigned daily and must be turned in the next morning • ixl: Please make sure you use it. There will be some homework assigned from ixl weekly
GRADING • The breakdown of your child's grade is as follows: • 40% Class work • 40% Test Scores • 10% Homework • 10% Projects After each testing period, I will send home the test scores.
HOW CAN YOU HELP? • Reading to your child: Please read to your child daily! And let your child read to you!! • Also take your child to the library! • Making sure your child has enough night sleep. • Making sure your child is bringing only the necessities to school.
