  1. Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority ParticipationLSAMP – Bridge to the Baccalaureate (B2B)

  2. History of LSAMP • Established by a Congressional mandate in 1991 to significantly increase the quality and quantity of minorities who successfully complete baccalaureate degrees in STEM & who graduate in these fields. • Program was designed to support individual student financially to ensure success in completing degrees in STEM.

  3. What is LSAMP • Provides assistance to universities and colleges in diversifying the STEM workforce through their efforts by significantly increasing the numbers of students successfully completing high quality degrees in STEM disciplines. • Emphasis: transforming STEM education through innovative recruitment and retention strategies and experiences in support of groups historically under-represented in STEM discipline

  4. LSAMP Goals • increasing the participation and advancement of underrepresented minorities • Increase the overall number and quality of 4-year STEM graduates • Increase STEM students from under-represented groups that will lead to new Ph.D.s and entrance into STEM professions. • Increase the number of STEM students transferring from 2-year to 4-year institutions

  5. LSAMP provides funding for: 3 Tracks: • Alliances: 4 levels • New • Mid-Level • Senior-Level • Bridges to Baccalaureate (B2B) NEW • Bridge to the Doctorate (BD) Activity • Broadening Participation Research (BPR) in STEM Education

  6. What is B2B Alliance? • Alliances are considered B2B if they consist entirely of community colleges (2-year degree granting) as partners and as the lead institution. • The B2B alliances provide a bridge to the baccalaureate degree for underrepresented minority STEM students who begin their instruction at a community college with the intent to transfer into 4-year STEM degree programs.

  7. B2B Focus Areas • Emphasis placed on pre-college, freshman and sophomores: • Innovative recruitment and retention of students in STEM disciplines • Innovative interventions for struggling STEM students • Transferability: • Strategies to establish and strengthen transferability of students to 4-year institutions • Must have strong articulation and transfer agreements with 4 year institutions

  8. Transfer vs. Workforce Development • The LSAMP program is focused on baccalaureate degree completion (B2B is focused on STEM transfer) • The LSAMP program is not focused on 2-year workforce development programs (terminal 2 year/occupational degrees). • For workforce development option consider: Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Program. • Deadline: October 18, 2012 & October 17, 2013
