Blizzard of 2009 Review Official Snowfall: 13.5 inches Records: 24-hour – 11.3 inches – Mar 19, 1924 Storm-total – 12.1 inches – Jan 5-7, 1988
Initial Thoughts… + Little Precip
December 23rd (morning) • Winter Storm Watch (Central/Northern OK)
December 23rd (afternoon) • Winter Storm Warning • Entire NWS CWA…4-6 inches…strong winds
December 24th (morning) • Winter Storm Warning upgraded • Widespread 4-8 inches…locally greater amounts
December 24th (late morning) • Blizzard Warning • Rapidly falling temps…strong winds…deepening low
Impacts • 9 fatalities • All major interstates and roads closed • Many stranded motorists • National Guard called in • Airports closed
Leaving for Weleetka, OK • Event ramping up • Roads starting to get slick here • Visibilities starting to drop • Weather not as bad to the east at the moment • Need to make it back tonight
Christmas Day • Traveled to Newcastle & Moore for family get-togethers (against my better judgement) • Saw at least 100 stranded cars…some in the middle of the interstate!
